I guess I’m going to join the ranks of critics and fans who have decided to speak openly and candidly about Will Smith sucker-slapping Chris Rock on national television at the Oscars. To be honest, as I write, I don’t even know where to begin; but I’m going to give it a shot. But before I do that, as a mental health professional, I feel like I need to give a disclaimer to this article:

This article reflects my personal thoughts and opinions based on very limited information in the grand scheme of the life of Will Smith. Given that I am not privy to the deep interpersonal and intrapersonal operations of Will Smith’s existence, the following article does NOT reflect my clinical thoughts or opinions in any, way, shape, or form. I use this forum as a means to process my own thoughts and feelings; and, like many of you, I am simply trying to make sense of what happened. I hope you enjoy the read.

My Initial Response

I woke up the other morning to a plethora of Facebook posts of pissed off people heavily criticizing Will Smith, an actor that I had grown up watching on TV and movies. Posts like:

“Will Smith should be arrested and charged with assault and battery.”

“Will Smith should be banned from the Oscars.”
