Twister (1996) vs Twisters (2024): An Okie’s Comparative Analysis

I was 16 years old when the 1996 film, Twister, came out in theaters. I remember feeling stoked that Hollywood was right in my own backyard making a movie that told a small part of our story as Oklahomans — and it did not disappoint in my opinion!

Many times, when I meet someone out of state that finds out I’m from Oklahoma, it’s not uncommon for them to reference or even ask about tornadoes. It’s in those moments that I remember that not everyone has to deal with tornadoes on the regular like Okies do. Similar to how Californians might feel about earthquakes, or Floridians about hurricanes, severe weather and tornadoes are just part of our identity as Oklahomans. So, having, not one, but two blockbuster movies about the phenomenon sometimes referred to as “twisters” with Oklahoma as the main character of the story, in my opinion…..well, it frankly warms my Okie heart.

In this article, I’m going to attempt to give my analysis of the newly released sequel called Twisters as it compares the original 1996 film.

As you read, please keep in mind a few things:

1. This is not a critique, but rather a comparative analysis. I’m not answering the question of “Is this a good or bad movie?” I’ve already determined for various reasons that both movies are great. In this…
