“Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.” — Babe Ruth

I have played a lot of baseball in my four decades upon this earth. These days, when I’m not playing baseball, I’m talking about it, writing about it, or on a field somewhere coaching it. Needless to say, I love this game.

As the game grows and evolves, and as we grow and evolve, we often realize we had it wrong. Maybe “wrong” is too strong of a word. What I mean is that as we become more polished in this game, we often realize there are better, more effective approaches to any given aspects of the game.

Unfortunately, some principles, philosophies, and practices are just plain stubborn. You probably catch yourself using adages you heard as a kid. There’s no doubt some are useful and have stood the test of time, but others seem to hang on when the should have been abandoned a long time ago.

What are common baseball expressions or principles you catch yourself saying that you also heard growing up?

The following teachings have been around since I was a kid. Although I get the gist of what is trying to be taught, I believe there is a better way. So let’s get into it!
